Product Description

A smooth finish intumescent coating system for application to new, primed and previously painted structural steelwork. Offers protection up to 90 minutes in accordance with BS 476 Part 21. Can be applied at the factory or on site and is suitable for both internal and external use. The various components can be colour coded to provide a visual indication of the progress of the coating system.

AREAS OF USE

To protect a wide range of structural steel and iron components such as, universal column, RSJ, hollow section and universal beam.

PRODUCTS

PRIMERS

S83/ISC/IP is an interior waterborne primer for use on new steel blast cleaned to SA2.5 or as an adhesion promoter on previously painted steel.

Colour-Red Oxide

S83/ISC/EP is a single-pack primer for exterior situations

Colour – Standard colours

Etchcote TW Mordant Wash – Designed for application to galvanized surfaces, prior to the application of either S83/ISC/IP or EP primers.

INTUMESCENT COATING

S83/ISC/TFI is a thin-film, waterborne coating available in five colours. Coat-on-coat application can produce film build of up to 3.0lt/m2 with wet film thickness of 2.5mm and above. Can be applied to galvanized steel when used with Etchcote TW Mordant Wash and S83/ISC/IP, EP or compatible standard zinc phosphate primers.

Colours-Blue, Green, Rose, Yellow or White

PROTECTIVE TOP COATS

S83/ISC/TC is available as either a waterborne (S83/INT/ITC – interior use only) or solvent-borne, single-pack, solvent-borne acrylic (S83/ISC/ETC – interior and exterior use) protective coating suitable for both interior and exterior application. Both may be applied directly over the S83/ISC/TFI intumescent Coating.

Finish – Mid Gloss

Colours-Most BS and RAL colours

APPLICATION

Application can be by brush, roller or airless spray. Film thickness is determined from orientation and section (series) of steel and then applying the Hp/A principle; dividing the heated perimeter (Hp) by the cross sectional area (A). Loadings and film thickness can be calculated by our technical department on provision of the required data or calculated by the customer from tables provided (see also the Hp/A values published by the ASFPCM in their document The Fire Protection for Structural Steel in Buildings).

(Full preparation and application instructions will be provided in the specification relating to the particular use)

For our technical department to calculate the quantities of each product required, we need to know the following:

1. What level of protection is required (i.e. 30, 60 or 90 minutes)?

2. What is the section size and weight (i.e. 203 x 203 x 71)?

3. What is the orientation (i.e. beam or column)?

4. Number of sides requiring coating (i.e. beams covered by a floor slab can only be accessed from 3 sides)?

5. Is the steelwork interior or exterior?

6. Is the steelwork primed, painted, galvanized or bare?

The above chart shows the possible wet film loadings for the various application methods (i.e. the maximum possible loading for one brush coat of S83/ISC/TFI is 0.6lt per square metre of surface, for spray is 1.4lt per m2 of surface etc). This is for guide only as environmental conditions will affect drying and viscosity.

Drying time between coats @ 20°C (approximate)

Brush/Roller: 2 Hours

Airless Spray: 12 Hours

Application guidelines for airless spray:

Operating Pressure: 2800 psi (20MPa – 200kp/cm2)

Nozzle tip: 0.43mm – 0.53mm (0.017-0.021”)

Distance to object: 30-40cm

Single pass coating thickness of up to 1mm, are possible with airless spray.

S83/ISC/I Intumescent Coating should be thoroughly dry before the undercoat and/or topcoat is applied.
